“I have seen and heard many things. The 7th Earl added to the castle and completed the outer defence wall in the c. 1600. I have stood here in both good and troubled times. Politics and religion were no stranger with the 8th Earl, created the 1st Marquis of Argyll. He placed the crown of Scotland on the head of Charles II, New Years day 1651 and thereafter proclaimed Cromwell as Lord protector of Scotland. Talk about changing sides! He was like a yo-yo. A royalist’s backlash attacked the castle destroying the great hall and in 1661, after the restoration of the monarchy the 1st Marquis was executed in Edinburgh.
“You may have heard of some of my other visitors like the fiery protestant preacher John Knox. He stayed in 1556 and deliver his sermons here at the castle and then there was the time Mary, Queen of Scots, visit to attend the wedding of the 5th Earls sister to James Stewart. Mary stayed in these very walls from 9 -12 January 1563. The weather up here at that time of year was awesome but the festivities included banquets and masques with guests dressing up. They were fun times, when my lord would show his power and influence.
