“I belong to a sergeant in the 93rd regiment of The Sutherland Highlanders who was shot and wounded in the Battle of Alma. Look for the bullet holes above the pocket on the left and also to the right of my buttons.
Our fellow soldier, Private Robert Sinclair, witnessed the bravery and wrote about the horrors of the battlefield at Alma: “Shot and shell tore up the ground around us. Our first fire caused the enemy to waver. We could see a Russian officer exerting himself to inspire courage but the Russian troops broke into full retreat, he rushed headlong, alone, sword in hand.
He fell in front of the 93rd having received two musket bullets through his forehead. Although he was an enemy he surely deserved a better fate…”
