What a Battle! What a day! The stories of that day are many and horrific. Even behind the front line the soldier's wives rallied to support our brave troops. Turkish troops supported our ranks on that bloody day, when The Thin Red Line held firm to defend the position. Mrs Smith was married to a Private in the 93rd, one of only four women who accompanied the regiment to the crimea. She saw her husband in the front ranks but became angry at some of the Turkish soldiers who fled toward the regiment's camp to escape the oncoming Russian Cavalry charge. As they came running into the camp Mrs Smith got hold of a big stick and laid about them shouting "Would you leave my regiment to be cut up" It was some sight to see and after this Mrs Smith became known as "Kokana" (lady) Smith.
On the 25th October 1854 the 93rd Sutherland helped repel a Russian cavalry charge on the town and harbour of Balaklava (Crimean War). The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders earned the famous title “The Thin Red Line” at the Battle of Balaklava when the regiment formed a line only two men deep during its repulse of enemy cavalry. The infantry tactic of the day, when engaging horsemen was to either form a defensive square or a line four men deep.
